When up-tuning your car, one of the first things you are required to do is reduce the gap on your spark plugs, this is because the more power you make, the more cylinder pressure is created the harder it is for your coil and spark plug to ignite the fuel and air mixture in your cylinder to make power. By reducing the gap between the electrodes you are making it easier for the spark to jump across and ignite the mixture (less Resistance), if the cylinder pressure creates too much resistance (high cylinder pressure) for this to happen the spark will not ignite the mixture and this cycle will not complete causing a Mis-fire.
The down side to this is, the lower your gap, the smaller the flame kernel is, which means a more incomplete burn at low pressure, meaning poorer idle quality of the engine.
